ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Anaheim Ducks signed holdout Hampus Lindholm to a six-year, $31.5 million contract through the 2021-22 season on Thursday, ending a stalemate with their talented Swedish defenseman. The 22-year-old Lindholm scored 92 points in 236 games over the past three seasons, developing into one of the NHLs top young blueliners with a fluid two-way game. The Swede missed training camp and the first eight regular-season games this fall while holding out.Im really happy to be back in Anaheim, Lindholm said in a phone interview from Sweden. Thats where Ive been all my career. This is the only time when we had time to sign me, and we could still keep some players. It was kind of perfect that way to keep the team that we had last year.General manager Bob Murray echoed Lindholms excitement about the deal, which allows the Ducks to preserve the four-time Pacific Division champions core. A dominant regular-season team, Anaheim has won only three playoff rounds in the past four seasons, never advancing past the Western Conference finals.Hes part of the future of this franchise, and we did everything we could to get him signed at a fair price, Murray said. I wanted to give this group another shot, and Im going to do everything in my power to keep it that way.The Ducks payroll is stretched to the limit, but owners Henry and Susan Samueli agreed with Murray about Lindholms importance, stretching the Ducks payroll to accommodate another large contract. They had my back the whole time, Murray said of the Ducks owners.Lindholm agreed to slightly less than the six-year, $32.4 million deal signed by Buffalo defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen earlier this month. Winnipegs Jacob Trouba is the NHLs only remaining restricted free agent without a deal, and he has asked for a trade.I was hoping to get this done in the summer, of course, but thats just how it is, Lindholm said. I cant do too much about that.Lindholm has been working out daily at home with a Swedish Elite League team, along with extra work at home. He expects to be ready to step into Anaheims lineup after he gets his visa, although that process could take up to two weeks.Forward Rickard Rakell, Lindholms teammate and fellow Swede, ended his own holdout by agreeing to a six-year, $22.8 million deal with Anaheim on Oct. 14, but he didnt practice with the Ducks until Wednesday.Ive been practicing hard, Lindholm said. Its going to be exciting to come back and play some real hockey again. The Ducks squeezed Lindholms deal under the salary cap by putting defenseman Simon Despres and center Nate Thompson on long-term injured reserve. Anaheim likely will have to make another move when either player returns from injury, but that might not happen for months. It was good this way, because now I can play and they didnt have to move anyone, Lindholm said. We still have the same team, which is really good because I think we have a real strong back end. We have the guys left from the core group, so its going to be an exciting year.Lindholm repeatedly mentioned the importance of getting a deal that would allow the Ducks to keep their core together. The Ducks were widely expected to afford Lindholm by trading another defenseman -- most likely Cam Fowler, the U.S. Olympian and a regular on Anaheims defense for six years.Fowler is the Ducks second-leading scorer this season with three goals and four assists in eight games. He is also leading the Ducks in ice time, averaging nearly 24 1/2 minutes per game.Lindholms average annual salary will be $5.25 million. He makes $3 million this year, $6 million in 2017-18, $6.75 million in 2018-19, $5.25 million in 2019-20, $3.75 million in 2020-21 and $6.75 million in 2021-22. "Ugly," player after player and manager Bob Melvin said. As ugly as the start was, the Athletics managed to put it behind them and rallied for a 4-3 win. Josh Reddick put Oakland on top with a two-run homer in the eighth inning and the Athletics remained perfect this season against the Astros. Chris Young hit a solo homer for the As, who are 10-0 against their new AL West foes this season and 15-1 all-time. The Astros have lost six straight overall. Houston took an early 3-0 lead thanks in part to Oakland tying a season high with three errors -- all in the first three innings. "That was the overriding feeling at the end of the game was that as badly as we played at the early part of the game, we stayed with it," Melvin said. "We didnt give up. We didnt put our heads down and say, Oh well, we are just having a bad game." Youngs shot cut the lead to one in the seventh before Reddicks drive to right field off Wesley Wright (0-4) made it 4-3. "Its one of those things where, you know that is the right matchup; its the matchup you want," Houston manager Bo Porter said. "If you dont win that matchup, you dont deserve to win the game." Young also tripled for another big game in his hometown. Three of Youngs nine homers this season have come at Minute Maid Park, and hes hit eight home runs with 30 RBIs in 22 career games in Houston. Young is hitting .333 against Houston this season, but just .165 against everyone else. "Fortunately, (Young) came up with a big at-bat," Reddick said. "I think that got the energy up in the dugout that we really needed to get going, especially since we left so many runners on base early on. After that happened it kind of picked us up a little bit." Ryan Cook (3-2) pitched a perfect seventh for the win and Grant Balfour did the same in the ninth for his 26th save. Balfour, who is the only closer without a blown save this season, has converted his last 44 chances dating to last season, an Oakland record and the sixth-longest streak in major league history. Chris Carter drove in a run for Houston and shortstop Jonathan Villar singled, scored and had a stolen base in his major leaguue debut.dddddddddddd Oakland starter Tommy Milone allowed five hits and three runs -- two earned -- in six innings. "Just the way it went, obviously there was something that was off," Milone said. "As a team, I dont think we felt comfortable on the field or at the plate. But we were able to stay in the game and get those big hits when we needed them." Dallas Keuchel yielded five hits and a run with five strikeouts in six innings for Houston. Justin Maxwell doubled to start the Houston second and stole second base. Maxwell scored and J.D. Martinez reached on an error by shortstop Jed Lowrie to make it 1-0. Villar got his first major league hit with a bunt single in the third. Villar, who stole 31 bases in Triple-A this season, quickly swiped second. Carters single to centre scored Villar to extend the lead to 2-0. Carter scored on an error by second baseman Grant Green when he couldnt make the catch on a routine fly. Josh Donaldson singled to start the Oakland sixth before a double down the right-field line by Nate Freiman. Reddick drew a walk with one out to load the bases, and a sacrifice fly by Green got Oakland within 3-1. Keuchel escaped the inning when he struck out Seth Smith. NOTES: The series continues Tuesday when Houstons top pitching prospect, Jarred Cosart (1-0), will be recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City to make his second major league start against Jarrod Parker (6-6). The 23-year-old Cosart took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and got the win in his debut against Tampa Bay just before the break, allowing two hits and no runs in eight-plus innings. ... Home Run Derby winner Yoenis Cespedes was out for the fourth straight game because of a sore left wrist but is feeling better. Melvin said Cespedes did a lot of work in the cage and will take batting practice Tuesday if he doesnt feel any soreness. Melvin isnt sure if Cespedes could play Tuesday. ... As LHP Brett Anderson, who has been on the disabled list since May 1 with a stress fracture in his right foot, threw 35 pitches in a bullpen session. "He threw the ball really well," Melvin said.
