MOSCOW -- Canadas womens rugby sevens team advanced all the way to the World Cup Final before falling to New Zealand 29-12. Ghislaine Landry of Toronto finished the tournament second in scoring (seven tries) and points (37). The Canadian women reached the final by defeating hosts Russia 15-12 in the quarters and Spain 10-0 in the semi. Skipper Nathan Hirayama scored three tries as Canada won the mens Plate competition after beating Samoa 19-12 in the final Sunday. It was Canadas third victory on Day 3 of the competition. The Canadians opened with a 26-0 rout of Tonga in the quarter-final followed by 21-7 victory over Scotland in the semi. Against Samoa, Canada battled through soaking wet conditions as Hirayama scored first with a smart grubber through the defence and over the line to make it 7-0. The fly half from Richmond, B.C., then finished off Sean Dukes strong surge down the left wing, dummying before diving through the gap for 12-0 lead at the break. Hirayama took four minutes upon the turnaround to wrap up his treble. He put boot to ball close to Samoas line and successfully regathered and scored. Earlier in the day, Hirayama added a second-half score against Tonga and made it 21-7 against Scotland with a successful try.
