In 1965, no university in the Southeastern Conference had a black player?on its football roster.?That changed when Kentucky made a move to desegregate not only its own football program but the entire SEC. In 1966, UK signed Nate Northington and Greg Pope as the first African-Americans to play football in the conference. Wilbur Hackett and Houston Hogg joined the program the following year.?In honor of those pioneers of integration, the Kentucky Wildcats erected a statue modeled after each of them. The university unveiled the tribute, located between the football training facility and Gate 12 of Commonwealth Stadium, on Thursday evening.
