Crew battles have settled regional rivalries throughout Super Smash Bros. Melees history, and this weekend the northern California scene is looking to restore its good name. Michigan Smash major The Big House 6 on Oct. 7-9 will run its second annual regional crew battle tournament, featuring eight crews from the US as well as Canada and Europe.A crew battle is a competition between two teams of five players each where players take turns playing one vs. one matches. The winner of a match carries over his remaining stocks, or lives, to play the next person on the other crew. The process is repeated until a team runs out of players. The team with players remaining is deemed the winner. In recent years, NorCal has established itself as one of the strongest regions in the world, featuring players such as DaJuan Shroomed McDaniel and Zachary SFAT Cordoni along with a slew of players that routinely finish in the final brackets of majors. Despite their talent, they failed to live up to high expectations at last years crew exhibitions by losing in the first round to Canadas crew.Team NorCal started strong, gaining a three stock lead as Roustane Kage Benzeguir was the only player left for Canada. Kage needed to take a total of seven stocks, including four of Shroomeds stocks, to advance into the next round. The circumstances looked grim, but Kage stepped up to the challenge as he defeated Kyle dizzkidboogie Athaydes Ice Climbers and then proceeded to dismantle Shroomed in embarrassing fashion to steal the victory. Cheers roared as a fan proudly waved a Canadian flag in the crowd and NorCal drifted away with their heads down.A Year of RedemptionA year later, NorCal seeks redemption after that disappointing first-round exit. Fortunately, they come with a much stronger five-man lineup as Kevin PewPewU Toy and Michael Nintendude Brancato join the likes of dizzkidboogie, Shroomed, and SFAT. Although NorCal had a large pool of players to choose from, they included two Ice Climbers players to take advantage of the no stage bans rule, giving them a strong counter-pick on Final Destination. Not everyone agrees with their lineup decision, but, as SFAT explained, I feel that our core four players, PewPewU, Nintendude, Shroomed, and myself, are the strongest and Kyle has improved so much over the past year and has proven himself with his crew battle performances at Shine 2016.More importantly, SFAT felt that PewPewU was the missing ingredient from last years crew. SFAT remarked, Unfortunately, PewPewU couldnt make it last year to The Big House 5, but hes our glue guy and makes sure that we are mentally positive. When I play with him in doubles, hes always the player that keeps our heads in the game. We didnt have the right mindset for last years crews and I felt that was a big reason why we lost. With a lineup that has four top-20 level players, team NorCal comes in very confident. Crews such as SoCal, Florida, and Europe also come in with stacked five-man lineups which would give any competition some pause for thought. SFAT gave his assessment: I believe that Europe looks a little weak and Im most scared of Florida, but we have the pieces to beat any team as long as we make the right decisions in our-counter picks. It will be a tall order for NorCal to defeat Florida, which has Evolution Championship Series 2016 champion Juan Hungrybox Debiedma, fellow Melee god Jason Mew2King Zimmerman and Justin Plup McGrath. SoCal is also fearsome, with god Joseph Mango Marquez along with an all-star lineup of top-20 players. Europe offers its finest in god Adam Armada Lindgren and potentially William Leffen Hjelte. Regardless, NorCals positive mindset is arguably the most important trait to have for crews as players need to adapt quickly while not succumbing to the pressure of the roaring crowds and cross-regional trash talk.Despite the competition, Shroomed believes that his region will come through. He quipped, We can win, one hundred percent, as long as SFAT and I do our parts against the other gods when we face them. We all have to pull our weight, but we can do it. Mitchell Starc may finally be about to become the dominant Test match bowler he has occasionally threatened to be, having passed 100 wickets amid the fine returns of 5 for 44 on the opening day against Sri Lanka in Galle. Having made his debut in December 2011, only five Tests after Nathan Lyon, Starc is more than halfway to the spinners tally of wickets, having played fewer than half the number of matches. For a long time Starc was a bowler who never played more than one Test in succession - following his first two appearances against New Zealand, he dropped out of the Test XI no fewer than 13 times for reasons of form, team balance, fitness or informed player management. Now 26 and free of the ankle spurs that afflicted him for much of that time, Starc is now ready to turn the glimpses he showed in playing 11 consecutive Tests in 2015.Physically I think the six-month break I had with my foot and my ankle was really good for me to get some really good time in the gym and build up that strength that I lost probably through the Ashes series and the one-day series there, he said. Ive been really happy with where my bodys at physically leading into the triangular series in the West Indies and this Test series.Im starting to get that consistency back in Test cricket anyway. The first Test here definitely wasnt the best Ive bowled, but started to get a bit of rhythm back through there, so I was pretty happy with how they came out today. Josh [Hazlewood] and I really enjoyed bowling with each other in partnerships. He hits a spot and is a genius at doing that, and allowing me to bowl as fast and aggressive as I can from the other end. We work really well together there, so its nice to be back and hopefully be around for a lot longer than I have in the past. The display at Galle may have started with the good fortune of a leg-stump half-volley flicked fortuitously to Joe Burns forward of square leg, but otherwise Starc posed a constant threat, offering bounce with the new ball and then sharp reverse swing with the old - movement that Hazlewood was able to extract as early as the 22nd over. He was able to prosper, too, without conjuring much in the way of conventional swing with the new ball: a method he has leaned on at times in the past.Sometimes it just doesnt swing as much for some guys, Starc said. For me it didnt swing too much in the first Test but did enough to create a few chances.dddddddddddd Today was finding a different way to take wickets and get the ball reversing. Therell be days where it swings a lot more and other days where it doesnt, but Joshy bowled pretty well with the swinging ball early and then with the reversing ball.Josh started getting a bit of reverse, so we talked about if we could hit that rough side a little bit more we might get more reverse and obviously it did. Josh bowled really well, I was lucky to get a bit of movement, and Mitchy Marsh bowled pretty well with the reversing ball as well, so I think we did that a lot better this game, and looked after the rough side of the ball better than the first Test. One reason Starc was all to utilise reverse movement was the fact he now possesses greater control of an away swinger to the right hander from over the wicket. In times gone by, he has mainly concentrated on using it from around the wicket, angle in then swing away. However, his work with Allan Donald on this tour has featured more use of the angle from over the stumps, and both bowler and interim coach were very satisfied to see Kusal Mendis fall to one such delivery. After this series, David Saker will take over as Starcs mentor on a three-year deal, heralding a period of continuity that he hopes will be mirrored by his bowling and body. With AD Ive been working pretty much on that delivery that got Mendis out with that reversing ball, Starc said. Pretty pleased thats come off and something Ive worked on with him since being in Colombo and obviously the last couple of weeks as well. ADs been great, weve all got a lot out of him so far and hopefully that continues for the rest of this Test and the third as well.I havent worked with David before, Ive heard good things about his time in England and speaking to a few of the Victorians on the triangular series tour Ive only heard good things. So Im excited to work with him later on, but at the moment its working alongside Allan Donald to try to win this series. Weve always got great guys around us, whether it be Craig McDermott, Allan Donald here or David Saker coming up. To have a guy locked in for the next three years, having that one guy there to work with us is really good for a young group. ' ' '
