Hes had his best year yet, but Greater Western Sydney forward Jon Patton has put a bigger emphasis on the rising AFL clubs near-miss season than his own improvement.Sidelined by injuries for much of his first four seasons, only one of which he played in more than seven games, Patton in 2016 started to consistently deliver on the potential that prompted the Giants to take him with first selection in the 2011 draft. He missed only their first game of the year and finished with career season highs in games (23), goals (38) and marks (131).Pattons radar improved after a ropy start. He kicked 4.6 in his first five games and 34.10 during his subsequent 18 matches.Although held goalless in the clubs historic first finals win over cross-town rivals Sydney, Patton booted 15 goals in three games either side of that victory, bagging four in the preliminary final loss to the Western Bulldogs on Saturday.I could have marked some balls that I dropped, little moments, Patton told AAP.But you dont really feel like youve played a good game or a decent game when you lose like that.Ive played pretty much every game, which I havent done in the past, so its good to do that. While a preliminary final appearance represented a significant spike in improvement by a team that had never finished higher than 11th, Patton made it clear the Giants werent satisfied. Its been an amazing season, to go from not playing finals at all and not even really being in contention to getting to a preliminary final, Patton said. Its a good effort, but we all had one goal and we didnt get that.It was a good year, but we were almost there.Weve just got to buckle up for next year and remember this feeling.Well just learn from it and to get ready for a big pre-season.GWS had only five goalkickers against the Bulldogs, a marked contrast with the multiple scoring threats they had through the season.Jeremy Cameron (53) Toby Greene (44) and Steve Johnson (43) were prolific contributors, with Patton, Rory Lobb (29) and Tom Scully (23) chipping in regularly.Cameron topped the Giants goal-kicking list for the fifth time in as many years of their AFL existence. But in contrast with his game-breaking effort in the qualifying final win over Sydney, Cameron wasnt a factor on Saturday, kicking just 0.1 and tallying only five disposals and one mark. FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Mike Maccagnan allowed himself to celebrate for a moment once he knew that Ryan Fitzpatrick was coming back to the New York Jets. The two sides ended a months-long contract stalemate by agreeing to terms on a one-year, $12 million deal Wednesday night. It became official when the quarterback signed all the paper work the next day, shortly before the Jets first training camp practice kicked off.For a night, I felt a big sigh of relief, said Maccagnan, entering his second season as general manager. And then, it was back to work. While speaking to reporters Friday for the first time since the NFL draft, Maccagnan wouldnt disclose details of the negotiations between the Jets and Fitzpatrick. The GM also wouldnt address comments by Fitzpatrick, who was unhappy with the teams initial three-year offer that lacked guaranteed money beyond the first year.Hey, the deal is done, Maccagnan said. Were very happy with it. Were happy to have Fitz back. I just want to go forward with this whole thing and get the team ready to go and play.Getting to this point, though, rested in large part on the outcome of Fitzpatricks contract situation. With that out of the way -- finally -- Maccagnan and the rest of the organization can focus again on just football. However, theres one thing the GM might do differently if ever faced with a similar situation in the future.Probably, I think going forward, Im going to get all these things resolved before I go on vacation, said a smiling Maccagnan, whose recent European trip was spent in part checking emails and texts. Two weeks ago, Maccagnan took care of the other contract situation hanging over the organization when the Jets signed defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson to a five-year extension worth $86 million. It appeared Wilkerson would have to play this season under the franchise tag amount of $15.7 million as the deadline of July 15 to reach a long-term deal approached. Wilkerson would have possibly sat out of training camp and an already uncomfortable situation could have become testy.Instead, the Jets and Wilkerson came to an agreement on a contract just minutes before the deadline. That was just one where it took us a while to get to that point, Maccagnan said.He added that Wilkersons big deal doesnt preclude us from being able to get a new contract done with defensive lineman Sheldon Richardsson, who is signed through next season but could demand huge bucks with a solid season.ddddddddddddThe Jets are coming off a 10-6 season in which they fell a victory short of making the playoffs. They have what many regard as a tough schedule to open this season, with games against Cincinnati, Buffalo, Kansas City, Seattle, Pittsburgh and Arizona.Still, the focus remains the same for Maccagnan and the rest of the organization: make the playoffs. Were gunning for it, he said. Thats our goal. Whether we achieve it or not, thats not the only benchmark well probably use to analyze how were doing. He wants the Jets to be competitive and build off of last years success. But if New York failed to make the postseason for the sixth straight season?I think wed have to go back and look at, if we didnt make it, what was positive and what was something to build on going forward, Maccagnan said. I dont know if I would necessarily say playoffs or bust. I know everybody probably wants that quote. But were just working one week at a time.He wouldnt look too far into the future as far as Geno Smiths status with the team, either, but gave every indication that the fourth-year quarterback would remain on the Jets roster this season.I would assume so, Maccagnan said. Hes had a very good offseason.Smith would have moved back into the starting role if Fitzpatrick hadnt been re-signed. He lost that job last summer when he had his jaw broken by a punch from a teammate in the locker room.Smith now slides back to No. 2 on the depth chart, followed by second-year quarterback Bryce Petty and second-round draft pick Christian Hackenberg. That gives the Jets four quarterbacks, and most NFL teams dont carry more than three into a season.Coach Todd Bowles acknowledged that having four QBs on the roster in Week 1 remains conceivable, and Maccagnan echoed that sentiment. Its something weve discussed and its a possibility, Maccagnan said. In our minds, really at that position, in todays NFL, you want to take time to grow and develop your quarterbacks. Weve discussed it internally, and if thats in the best interest of the team going forward, then well do it.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and AP NFL Twitter feed: http://twitter.com/AP-NFL ' ' '
