NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- South Carolina is seeking to win its fourth consecutive Southeastern Conference womens basketball title with help from two players who began their college careers elsewhere.The Gamecocks feature former North Carolina guard Allisha Gray and ex-Georgia Tech guard Kaela Davis, who sat out last season due to NCAA transfer rules after earning all-Atlantic Coast Conference honors in 2014-15.It really has been a breath of fresh air having them on our team because they give us so many different options with what they can do on both sides of the ball, South Carolina coach Dawn Staley said Thursday at the SEC Tipoff media day event.South Carolinas roster also includes former Kentucky forward Alexis Jennings, who wont be eligible to play for the Gamecocks until next season. More than two dozen SEC players began their careers with other Division I teams, though several wont be eligible to play until next season.Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Mississippi and South Carolina each have three players who started out at other Division I programs. The medias preseason all-SEC team includes Tennessee guard Diamond DeShields, who is Grays former North Carolina teammate.Texas A&Ms Gary Blair said the rise in transfers nationwide is an epidemic. Coaches offer a variety of reasons for the trend.Georgias Joni Taylor noted many prospects choose colleges earlier in the recruiting process and then discover the school wasnt what they expected.Auburn coach Terri Williams-Flournoy agrees.They dont choose the right school, they dont choose the right style of play, Williams-Flournoy said. A lot of times it seems they go for the name of the school or they go where somebody wants them to go. Its not really the right fit for them, and a lot of times that leads to them transferring.And kids just dont stay and fight it out like they used to. When things arent going well, its easy for them to just get up and go.The transition, however, to a new school isnt always so easy.DeShields acknowledges her first season at Tennessee was a challenge, as she struggled to deal with injuries and adapt to her new squad. DeShields said she finally felt comfortable late in the season after coaches told her to rely on her instincts.Ranked fourth at the start of the season, Tennessee suffered a school-record 14 losses but made a surprising run to an NCAA Tournament regional final.Last year I still wasnt in the position that I wanted to be in as far as a leadership role, DeShields said. I tried to slide in there without stepping on anybodys toes, and it was hard. I feel like this year Ive been able to establish myself as a key component and leader of this team.Davis and Gray arrive at South Carolina with track records similar to the credentials DeShields brought to Tennessee. Davis ranked third (19.2) and Gray ranked eighth (15.8) in the ACC in scoring in 2014-15. Gray also ranked 11th in rebounds (7.6).They join a nucleus that includes 2015-16 SEC player of the year Aja Wilson and first-team all-SEC selection Alaina Coates. Wilson said Gray and Davis have blended in well. Staley agreed but acknowledged that its also the innocent time of year before any games have been played.Sometimes we even forget that they were even transfers, Wilson said. We think they were there from the get-go.South Carolina won SEC regular-season titles in 2014 and 2016 and shared the crown with Tennessee in 2015. The Gamecocks reached a Final Four in 2015 and have a combined 67-5 record over the last two seasons.That recent history helped attract Gray and Davis to South Carolina. Staley believes South Carolinas success also will help assure the transfers fit right in.Weve established a culture that they liked, Staley said. Obviously they chose to come to South Carolina for a reason, and that reason was they wanted to compete for a championship and they wanted something a little bit different than what was in their (previous) situation.Thats what well continue to harp on, is this is how we do it. Restriction on TV advertisements Lodha Committee recommendation: That all existing television and broadcasting contracts for Test and one-day internationals be reworked with new terms that allow for ad breaks only during drinks, lunch and tea intervals. The recommendations also stated that a large portion of the TV screen display the game and only a small portion display sponsors logos or other advertisements.The BCCIs objection: The board argued that reworking or modifying existing broadcasting contracts would result in serious financial difficulties and heavy financial loss for the BCCI. It also stated the games telecast was not hampered by commercial exploitation of the event.Courts response: The Supreme Court left it to the BCCI to examine the matter of the quality of broadcast keeping in mind the committees reservations about television coverage and the omnipresence of commercial advertising. The BCCI was asked to take a considered decision with regard to the Committees recommendations and study the possibility of modification in existing contracts.Bringing BCCI under the RTI, and legalising betting Lodha Committee recommendation: The committee recommended that because the Supreme Court had stated that the BCCI discharged public functions, it needed to be brought under the Right to Information Act, 2005, thus giving the general public the right to ask for information about the boards functioning and activities.Courts response: The Supreme Court said while that the public did have a right to know details about the BCCIs functioning, it was for the law commission to examine the issue of including the BCCI under the Right to Information Act and pass on its recommendation to the government; only then could the the government move to legisllate and bring the board under the RTI Act.dddddddddddd Similarly, the court said the recommendation to legalising betting could only be implemented by an enactment of a law, which comes under the purview of first the law commission and then the government.Funding a players association Lodha Committee recommendation: That an independent players association be established to give players a voice to raise their concerns and have them discussed with the BCCI. The committee recommended that the BCCI handle the expenses involved in the creation and functioning of the association. It also stated that two representatives of the association, one male and one female, be nominated to the Apex Council - the proposed body that would replace the Working Committee, the BCCIs highest decision-making body.The BCCIs objection: While the BCCI didnt challenge the formation of a players association, it asked why the board should extend financial support to it. The BCCI also opposed the recommendation to provide representation to players association members in the Apex Council, contending that some of the cricketers had in the past held offices in state associations and in the BCCI by recourse to the democratic process.Courts response: The Supreme Court held that it wasnt an unacceptable idea for the BCCI to financially assist the players association, but the extent of support was left to the boards discretion. However, the court said it did not see why the players representatives should not be on the Apex Council, given the players association would represent a very significant and important segment of the stakeholders in the game.
