(STATS) -- Dayton and San Diego are the most successful programs in PFL history, so its only fitting they begin league play against each other Saturday at Torero Stadium. The Flyers have won 12 titles and the Toreros have been champions seven times since the PFL began play in 1993. One of these teams has either won the PFL title outright or been co-champion in nine of the last 11 years, including in 2015 when they shared the crown with 7-1 league records.Since the PFL received an automatic bid to compete in the FCS playoffs starting in 2013, San Diego represented the league in 2014 and Dayton made its first appearance last season thanks to a 13-12 home win over the Toreros on Oct. 10 that gave the Flyers the tiebreaker.San Diego was a one-point favorite over Dayton to win the title this year in preseason voting by the leagues head coaches, though the Flyers received six first-place votes while the Toreros got the other five. San Diego has been selected as the preseason favorite in each of the last six years.Dayton has won 16 of 23 all-time meetings with San Diego but has dropped the last two on the road by a combined score of 81-38. The Toreros have won 30 of their last 32 at home. Its a business trip, Flyers redshirt senior defensive tackle Michael Scott said. Were not here for fun, were not here for the nice weather, were not here for the sun. Were here to win a football game and thats in the forefront of our mind every time we go out there. The Flyers (2-1) are coming off a 34-20 loss at defending Northeast Conference champion Duquesne last Saturday, while San Diego (1-1) hasnt played since a 38-16 road defeat to Cal Poly on Sept. 10 that ended a seven-game win streak that began after Octobers setback at Dayton. The Flyers defense was expected to be the teams strong point this season, and Dayton ranks second in the league with 301.7 yards allowed per game. Sophomore safety David Leisring has a PFL-high three interceptions and redshirt senior defensive end Mike Gray is tied for the league lead with 3 1/2 sacks.Dayton will be looking to stop quarterback Anthony Lawrence, who was voted the PFLs 2015 offensive freshman of the year after he led the league in passer rating (153.5) while finishing second with 23 touchdowns to just six interceptions. The Flyers picked off Lawrence in last years win and held him to his lowest passer rating (92.9) of 2015 as he finished 15 of 32 for 160 yards and a TD while getting sacked twice. Were stoked about it, using this bye week but not really treating it as a bye week, Lawrence said last Thursday. Were already getting ready for Dayton. Theyre a phenomenal team with a lot of athletes, a lot of older veterans. ... Theyre a great team and we really have been preparing tough this whole week.Lawrence has completed 32 of 50 passes for 338 yards with three touchdowns and no INTs this season. His counterpart, fellow redshirt sophomore Alex Jeske, has struggled in the last two games for Dayton, going 25 of 53 for 331 yards with no TDs and two picks. Jeske completed 13 of 30 passes last season against San Diego, throwing for 188 yards with a touchdown, an interception and getting sacked three times. Tramon Williams Super Bowl Jersey . CINCINNATI -- Andy Dalton had no time to throw the ball and no running game to blunt some of the Jets pass rush.In the end, it would be up to him to save the Cincinnati Bengals on opening day.He did it with a quality performance.Dalton shook off a career-high seven sacks and other bruising hits while rallying the Bengals to a 23-22 win at the Meadowlands on Sunday. The Bengals first win on the Jets field since 1981 -- when they were playing at Shea Stadium -- came down to two players in particular. It all starts with Andy and the way he conducts the offense, receiver A.J. Green said. Thats a big part of why we have success. He gets us in some great plays. In many ways, he was at his best. And it was the most encouraging sight for Cincinnati in an up-and-down opener.Dalton broke the thumb on his passing hand last season and missed the final three regular-season games and a playoff loss to Pittsburgh. In his first game back, he was fully back in the form that made him the AFCs top-ranked passer last season with a 106.3 rating. After a slow start, he was as good as it gets.Dalton went only 3 of 7 for 77 yards with two sacks and an interception in the first quarter. The rest of the way, he was 20 of 23 for 289 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions while getting sacked five more times. No matter how many times he got hit, he didnt get rattled.Dalton finished with a passer rating of 114, which was even more impressive considering that the onus was mostly on him to move the offense. Cincinnati rushed for only 57 yards overall. It wasnt only Daltons doing. Green had one of his most sensational games as well, catching a dozen passes for 180 yards, including a 54-yard touchdown while guarded by Darrelle Revis.Adjusting to the Jets fierce rush, first-year offfensive coordinator Ken Zampese went to quick receiver screens and showed some of the creativity that characterized the offense under former coordinator Hue Jackson.ddddddddddddZampese used an unbalanced line, had linemen flanked out to block in receiver positions, and ran a wildcat formation. The Bengals recognized that the Jets couldnt stop Green and got him the ball as often as possible. Thirteen of Daltons 30 passes went his way.Dalton was perfect on a pair of field goal drives that ended each half. He completed all of his eight passes for 62 yards to set up Mike Nugents 21-yard field goal that ended the first half. Trailing with 3:18 to go, he completed all four of his passes and led the Bengals into range for Nugents decisive 47-yard field goal.Dalton didnt play the closing minutes of a half during the preseason.Im pleased he got two of them in one game and he handled both of them very, very well, coach Marvin Lewis said.Game notes The Bengals play at Pittsburgh on Sunday, trying to open the season with two road victories for the first time in their history. Its the fourth time theyve started with two games on the road. ... The Bengals won in Pittsburgh last season, but lost to the Steelers twice at Paul Brown Stadium, including the 18-16 playoff game. ... Safety George Iloka disagreed with his 15-yard penalty for a hit on Jets receiver Jalin Marshall. Iloka made shoulder-to-shoulder contact, and their helmets appeared to hit, as he broke up a pass.
