CANBERRA Wholesale Knicks Jerseys , Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Indigenous Australians in the Northern Territory (NT) have called for a ban on commercial fishing in their waterways.


Traditional owners of Arnhem Land, the region in the far northeastern corner of the NT, claim that commercial fishing has restricted their ability to feed their families.


"We're just upset, they've been doing this for too long, and our catch rate is going right down especially for barramundi," Julius Kernan Cheap Knicks Jerseys , a member of Maningrida community, told Australian media on Thursday.


"I've got three sons who hunt every day, they're having problems (catching fish) and it's happening right in front of us.


Arnhem Land is 500 kilometers east of Darwin, the NT's capital, and is home to the iconic Kakadu National Park.


The Australian High Court in 2008 granted exclusive coastal water rights to native land owners but the decision has not yet been implemented with the Northern Land Council in May extending free access to the waterways.


"We've always heard what's coming out of Maningrida: that Aboriginal people want to be involved in the management of fish stocks, they want to be comforted by the fact that any marine mammal impacts are taken care of Charles Oakley Jersey , and that sacred sites are looked after," Joe Morrison, leader of the Northern Land Council, said.


Australia's Seafood Council said it was drawing up a code of conduct for its members in response to a petition presented to NT Chief Minister Michael Gannon by Kernan and members of the North Wind Fisheries Committee.


"We need to make sure that there's actually viable fisheries out there to be a part of, and so one our key responsibilities and focuses is on making sure the commercial fisheries out there have best practice in place, and more importantly they're doing things sustainably from an environmental and economic perspective Bernard King Jersey ," Katherine Winchester from the council said.

Police on a British military base in Cyprus on Thursday launched their latest weapon in the fight against illegal bird trappers - a high-tech drone.


A recent study by Britain's Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), said Cypriot trappers killed 2.3 million migrating birds in autumn 2016, up from 1.4 million in 2010.


Compared with other nations, that makes Cyprus the second-most deadly bird destination in the Mediterranean, after Malta. And most of the industrial killing takes place within British military-controlled areas Willis Reed Jersey , especially the eastern sovereign base of Dhekelia, outside the south coast resort of Larnaca.


After Cyprus gained independence in 1960, Britain retained sovereignty over two base areas covering some 254 square kilometers of the island's territory where it runs its own police and courts.


British authorities said the drone would mainly be used by an action team dedicated to combating illegal bird trapping due to the crystal clear imagery it can generate from great heights at a top speed of more than 80 kilometers per hour.


The top-of-the-range drone, which has night-vision capabilities, will enhance the police's ability to cover areas that have proved difficult to reach in the past.


The Dhekelia garrison divisional commander, Chief Superintendent Jon Ward Phil Jackson Jersey , said base police "are absolutely committed to targeting anybody involved in illegal bird trapping and we will use all legal methods in order to do this."


Ward told reporters that police across British base territory will also be using hidden cameras, a method which has proved successful in recent months in leading to the prosecution of bird trappers.


"We have seen some significant sentences handed down by the courts recently and the use of these techniques... and it will be intelligence-led to target criminals," he added.


"My message to anyone thinking of engaging in illegal activity but more specifically in bird trapping is to be aware that we will be out both day and night to catch you," he concluded.
